Guide to Kaitangata
Kaitangata, colloquially known as Kai, is a small city near South Otago. Located just 6 miles south-east of Balclutha, the town lies on the left bank of the Clutha River. The city is famous for Inch Clutha, a small island, and Lake Tuakitoto, which lies in the northern region.
Kaitangata’s growth engine had been primarily driven by underground coal mines, which produced high quality sub-bituminous coal for steam railway engines. However, the mines witnessed a downfall trend by 1970 due to the advent of diesel locomotives. One of the open-cast coal mines – Kai Point Mine, is still operational. The mine is being controlled by the Kai Point Coal Company, which mines as well as produces coal for domestic heating and other industrial applications. The Kaitangata Line railway catered to the logistic needs of the mines. Rail lines were initially privatized, but eventually came under the direct possession of the State Mines Department. The ‘Improved F’ locomotive, which used to move coal, is now with some preservation society in Westland. Presently, the locomotive operates couple of heritage trains.
